Home-Based Sleep Study

Indications

A home-based sleep study may be recommended if you’re experiencing any of the following:

What is a Home-Based Sleep Study?

A home-based sleep study is a simple, non-invasive test that monitors your breathing, heart rate, and body movements while you sleep in your own home. This test helps diagnose sleep conditions such as sleep apnea, restless leg syndrome, or insomnia. Doing the test at home allows you to follow your normal routine, so your doctor gets accurate information about your sleep patterns to help treat any sleep issues.

What Can I Expect During the Test?

Setting up the home-based sleep study usually takes about 15-30 minutes. Here’s what will happen:

1. A monitor will be placed around your chest, over your clothes, to track your breathing and heart rate.

2. Electrodes (small sticky patches) will be placed on your face, neck, chest, and leg to measure muscle activity.

3. Clear tubing will be gently inserted in your nose to monitor your breathing.

4. A clip will be placed on your finger to measure your oxygen levels while you sleep.

5. After everything is set up, you’ll be free to go home and sleep with the monitor on.

6. In the morning, you’ll fill out a short questionnaire about your sleep experience.

7. After completing the questionnaire, you’ll remove the monitor and return everything in the provided case to the clinic.

What Are the Risks of the Test?

A home-based sleep study is safe and easy to do. However, you might feel a little uncomfortable sleeping with the monitor and sensors attached. Some people may notice slight redness or irritation where the electrodes were placed, but this should go away soon after the test.

Preparation

(This test will take up to 30 minutes)

To ensure the test goes smoothly, here are some tips:

  • Don’t apply any creams, moisturisers, or makeup on the day of the test.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothes to sleep.
  • Remove any nail polish, acrylic, or gel from your index finger so the oxygen sensor can detect signals properly.
  • Take a shower before coming to the clinic.
  • Using public transport is not recommended.
  • There is a $100 administrative fee for the test and a $50 security deposit, which will be refunded when the equipment is returned on time and in good condition.
